This time, the theme is “how to sit”. Here are some points to keep in mind.

(1) When sitting on a chair

When you have a delicious lunch or a sweet treat, you sit on a chair. In fact, there is a point that you should be most careful when sitting on a chair in a kimono. That is the tare of the obi. What is a tare? Many of you may wonder, “What is tare? Tare is the cloth under the obi (please refer to the illustration).

In many cases, this goes up when you sit down. So, when you stand up, the lean-to may stay up. Please don’t forget to check the lean-to after sitting on a chair.

And there is another little trick to sitting on a chair! If the space between the table and the chair is narrow, it is better to sit on the left side of the chair by slightly pulling up the upper front (right thigh) with the right hand. This will make it much easier to sit down.

 

(2) When taking a cab

Cabs are convenient for sightseeing in Kyoto. Especially when sightseeing with a group of several people, it is recommended to take a cab well to shorten the travel time.

When getting into the car, first align the hem in front of your body so that it is out of the way. Sit shallowly on the seat, rotate your body and pull your legs in last for a smooth ride! If you have your hair set, please be careful not to let your hair set hit the ceiling of the car! When getting out of the car, follow the reverse procedure for an easier exit.
